The last thing we all want is having bags under our eyes. While they typically are nothing to panic over, dark circles around the eyes can make you feel and look older and also cause you to use tons of makeup just to keep it out of sight. It’s a good thing to know that by changing certain habits and taking a certain lifestyle and dietary steps, one can get rid of those bags under the eyes for good.
About Under-Eye Bags
It’s a common thing that as we age, we may probably begin to notice under-eye puffiness. This can also be caused by stress and even lack of sleep. It is generally called bags under the eyes, puffy eyes and dark circles under the eyes. It’s not always a problem that requires medical attention, but the question on the lips of many is how to get rid of bags under the eyes. If you are wondering how we get these unsightly bags in the first place, there are many causes. Generally, skin tissues around the eyes and eyelids weaken and sag, causing fluid to accumulate beneath the eyes, which creates puffiness under the eyes and a swollen appearance. Things like seasonal allergies, eczema, water retention and sleeping face down can aggravate the condition, with heredity playing a role as well. And also behaviours like smoking, drugs and alcohol.
Causes Of Bags Under The Eyes
Bags under eyes can include mild swelling, saggy or loose skin and/or even dark circles. We may not like the way these bags look and may feel our confidence wavering a bit, just know that these things are usually harmless and may not require medical attention. But if you ever experience severe and persistent bags accompanied by redness, itching or pain, you may want to see a doctor.
As you age, the tissue structures and muscles supporting your eyelids weaken with the loss of collagen. This weakening of the tissue can cause the skin to begin sagging. The fat that is normally found in the area around the eyes may move into the area below your eyes, accumulating fluid and making the under-eye area appear puffy or swollen. Some causes of bags under the eyes include, but not limited to:
- Fluid retention due to changes in weather
- Lack of sleep
- Hormone levels
- Salty foods
- Allergies
- Eczema
- Heredity.
Why You Shouldn’t Use Unnatural Ways To Get Rid Of Bags Under The Eyes
The truth is, the skin around our eyes is very delicate and so we need to take special care when applying anything around or near the eyes. Most natural methods I’ll describe in this post shouldn’t cause any problems. But if the puffiness worsens or you notice any irritation, see your doctor. On the other hand, avoid any unnatural method of getting rid of bags (sagging/baggy dark skin under eyes) like over-the-counter or prescription creams or procedures such as injections. These can cause:
- Allergic reactions might occur.
- Further discolouration.
- Wrong product use can aggravate the issue.
- It can cause irritation.
- You do not know if the ingredients are safe for your skin.
Be sure to contact your doctor anytime you experience any further discolouration or irritation as a result of using any unnatural method or product.
How to Get Rid of Bags Under Eyes
Bags under the eyes are a common development of age. Usually, normal fat that helps support the eye sometimes moves into the lower eyelid, which causes the lid to appear puffy and dark. Fluid may also accumulate in the area below your eyes, which can add to the swelling. But it’s nothing that some simple things can’t fix. Here’s how to get rid of bags under your eyes using simple natural ways like eliminating some bad habits and other home remedies that can help reduce the appearance of bags under eyes:
1. Your Allergies Should Be Taken Care Of:
You are aware of when your allergies come up and know that this may leave eyes watery and puffy. If you are one of those who experience this, try natural remedies like essential oils for allergies, to help manage them and catch them before they start. You can also have a small vial of an allergy essential blend handy for those days some allergies can sneak up when you least expect it.
2. Correct Your Sleep Position:
Sleeping on your back can actually prevent gravity from causing fluid buildup around the eyes. Consider adding an extra pillow under your head as well, but make sure it is a pillow that is effective for a good sleep so it doesn’t hinder your sleep as that can add to the problem of bags and dark circles under the eyes.
3. Exercise Properly:
Exercising is definitely a natural way to reduce signs of ageing and promote a youthful glow to the skin, however, the area around the eyes will benefit from some special facial exercises like slow exercises of the facial muscles to help tone and tighten them. Any exercise like inverted poses or any other related exercises can help increase circulation to the face, which carries away excess fluid and helps relieve swelling.
4. Go Easy On The Salt:
The sodium in salt can cause fluid retention and lead to puffiness under the eyes. If you must use salt, use pure Himalayan sea salt, but still a little bit. Also, avoid very salty foods and opt for fresh vegetables which can help curb your desire for salt!
5. Don’t Hit The Bed With Makeup On:
Leaving your eye makeup, or any makeup on can irritate your eyes, causing them to water and get puffy. Make sure to gently remove your eye makeup before hitting the bed to help eliminate any added irritation around the eyes.
6. Use an All-Natural Eye Cream:
Since ageing typically causes dehydration of the skin due to lack of collagen, moisturizing is essential. All-natural eye creams can prevent saggy skin under the eyes. It’s best to use these even before you have dark saggy skin to prevent it. Even if your skin is great now, get in the habit of using an eye cream with these great ingredients to help maintain that firm and beautiful look. Go for a cream with shea butter, vitamin E, grape seed oil, avocado oil, or jojoba oil. All of these natural ingredients will help keep your skin looking great and help lower inflammation and regenerate your skin. There are lots of creams available, but I recommend this Award-Winning Organic Eye Cream by Eavara to get the job done perfectly.
7. Avoid Alcohol And Cigarettes:
Alcohol dehydrates your body and skin in general. This dehydration can cause the delicate area around your eyes to appear sunken and dark. Also, alcohol can cause bloodshot and tired eyes. Take it easy on the alcohol os simply avoid it entirely. I would suggest drinking lots of water instead as you will feel fresher and the skin around your eyes will glow because it’s more hydrated.
Smoking cigarettes dries out and weakens the skin on the face as well as the whole body. It also causes premature ageing around the eyes in particular. The chemicals found in cigarettes are toxic and can cause irritation around the eyes, which could result in dark circles or under-eye bags in addition to a wrinkled, droopy appearance. Avoiding it would do you a whole lot of good.
8. Opt For Cold Compress And Cucumbers:
If your eyes are swollen and puffy, try a cold compress. Not only can this help reduce puffy eyes, but it can also be very relaxing which adds to a youthful appearance. You can achieve this by using chilled spoons on top of your eyes, chilled, dampened tea bags, or even slices of cucumbers with a drop of lavender essential oil added. The cool temperature is what makes this home remedy effective.
9. Avoid Long Exposure In The Sun:
Staying long in the sun can make the skin around the eyes sag and wrinkle as well as cause dehydration of the skin. A mineral-based or homemade sunscreen, a good pair of UV-protected sunglasses, and a hat can do wonders to help protect your face from these harmful rays, ultimately keeping the skin around the eyes from wrinkling and darkening due to the effects of the sun. Even in the winter or on cloudy days, the sun can cause serious damage, which causes your skin to sag and wrinkle. Wearing SPF 30 or 50 every day can help reduce skin sagging and prevent loose skin around eyes. I will recommend this Banana Boat Ultra Sport Sunscreen Lotion that works like a charm and leaves you fully protected when you are out in the open.
10. More Collagen To Your Diet:
Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies. It’s found in our muscles, bones, skin and tendons. It gives our skin strength and elasticity and helps replace dead skin cells. Our body’s collagen production naturally begins to slow down as we age and this can begin to give you under-eye bags. Increasing collagen levels can help your skin look firmer, increase smoothness, and help your skin cells keep renewing and repairing normally. Some foods that can boost collagen include leafy greens, meat, oysters and citrus. Collagen supplements, like collagen protein powder, can also increase collagen intake.
11. Use A Makeup Concealer:
While you can’t necessarily remove dark circles at once, you can often hide them by lightening the area with a concealer. There are some mineral-based options available, like this L.A. Girl Pro Concealer. You can choose options that match your skin tone and then simply apply it by lightly patting it onto the skin around the eyes. Do not rub it into the skin as this may cause further irritation. Also, do not use too much as you want to have a natural appearance to the skin.
You can easily get rid of bags under the eyes and say goodbye to those dark circles if you just stay consistent and committed to these things. In no time, you’ll get your firm, clear under-eye back.
So, have you tried any of these? Or do you have a method that works for you? Let’s hear it below.

Wow! Thank you! I constantly needed to write on my blog something like that. Can I implement a part of your post to my blog?
Hmmm. Haven’t tried any of these. But I’m willing to do that now.
Thanks.
Bookmarked.. For a friend though. Lol.
Bags under the eye sure kick one’s confidence out the window. I’m going to do this.
This is by far the simplest method I have seen and I am definitely going to make it a habit.
Phew! Finally, someone with natural method and not a list of “miracle” products to buy!
I grew up having dark eye circles and honestly I have tried many things but no much luck. Sometimes I get lucky and the appearance reduces. I think the next option is seeing a doctor to see if there’s a solution.
Mine is definitely caused by stress and it’s just so sad that I can’t help it. I’ll try some of these and see how far I can go. Thanks for this.
