With the current stay-at-home trend we are recording globally due to the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic, might as well just make the most of it and learn how to make your very own homemade lip balm for use or to even turn into a business after the whole quarantine stuff is over. In this post, I’m going to show you how you can make your own natural lip balm at home without stress.
Why You Need A Natural Lip Balm
The lips, just as the rest of your skin needs nourishment, moisturising and care. The skin on the lips are sensitive and are easily affected by harsh weather, sun and lifestyle. And so you are to provide your lips with the care they need to remain soft and luscious, this is best done with a natural lip balm.
It’s very important to pay attention to your lips to avoid chapped or peeled lips. Using lip balm to keep your lips hydrated always will prevent them from getting dry and chapped and this will also moisturize your lips making them soft.
How To Make Your Own Homemade Natural Lip Balm
Yes, I know it’s amazing to know that you can finally make your own 100% natural lip balm and customize it to suit your taste in just a few minutes.
It would interest you to know that the basic ingredients are readily available even in your kitchen, and also fun to make throughout the whole process. So, let’s start off by making 100g of lip balm for now.
Ingredients needed for making your own lip balm
Beeswax (10grams)
Sweet Almond Oil or Sea Buckthorn Oil (30grams)
Cocoa Butter (25grams)
Virgin Coconut Oil (15grams)
Vitamin E Oil (0.5grams) or 2 capsules (if you can’t find the oil)
Cosmetic Colouring Powder (1.5grams)
Spirulina Powder (7grams)
Vanilla Essential Oil (4grams)
Acai Berry Powder (7grams)
You will also need a tube or jar for storing and preservation
Method for preparing your natural lip balm
- Add Sea Buckthorn oil or Sweet Almond Oil, Beeswax and Cocoa Butter in a heat resistance jar or you can use a Pyrex bottle.
- Create a double boiler to heat the ingredients on a heat source.
- Once they melt, add the remaining ingredients like Coconut oil, Vitamin E oil, Vanilla Essential oil and colouring powder. (NB: If you want a minty feel, add peppermint essential oil instead).
- Whisk and transfer into tubes or a jar to completely solidify. Best to pour it into the containers you want to start using it from. If it gets solid, you may not be able to transfer it.
- And voila! You have your own homemade lip balm ready to use on the go to moisturize your lips.
You see it’s so simple to make for personal or commercial use. It can make a great gift for friends and family too if you want to surprise them this coming Easter. If you want to see what a popular brand has done with some of these same ingredients, here’s one from EcoLips I found on Amazon. They came close with their natural ingredients, so you can pick inspiration from them to try yours.
Benefits of the ingredients used in the lip
1. Virgin Coconut Oil:
Coconut oil is naturally anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and also moisturizing. It contains nourishing fatty acids, lauric acid, vitamin E and healthy fats which help to make skin smooth.

Cocoa Butter improves the skin’s moisture and creates a barrier to protect the skin from moisture loss. It can be absorbed well without leaving the skin greasy, and also helps the skin maintain its elasticity and tone.

Beeswax has many healing properties, is high in vitamin A and support cell reconstruction and health. It is protective and helps form a barrier between our skin and the environment without clogging the pores.

Want something even a lot easier?
I got a very good one and here is how to make a quantity that would fill up close to 20 chapsticks/lip balm tubes:
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons of Beeswax Pellets
- 2 tablespoons of Virgin Coconut Oil
- 8 drops of essential oil of your choice (vanilla, orange, lavender, peppermint, lemon etc.)
- You will need a clean syringe if you intend to pour it straight into the tube once you are done. But you can skip it if you want to pour into containers instead.
P.S: If you want the lip balm to be less oily, use more of beeswax and less coconut oil e.g 3 tablespoons of beeswax pellets and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.
Preparation
- Wash all you will need to use.
- Pour the beeswax pellets in a small glass bowl and microwave for like 45 seconds. Alternatively, you can use a double boiler to heat it till it melts completely.
- Then add the virgin coconut oil to the bowl, and return to the microwave/double boiler for a few more seconds to melt and mix it.
- Go ahead and add the essential oil you want (if you choose to have different flavours, share the melted oil and add the different essential oils to each bowl).
- Next, return the bowl to the microwave/double boiler for like 15 seconds.
- Get it out, stir the mixture and start pouring into containers. Use a syringe if you are pouring it into lip balm tubes.
- Once you have poured them all, wait for a few minutes and they will all get solid. (if the lip balm in the bowl starts to get solid before you finish, heat it up for a few more seconds and continue).
- If you are going commercial, you can get your printed label and start placing them on the tubes.
P.S: If you are using a microwave, be careful with the glass bowl. Whenever you finishing microwaving it, wait for a minute (or more) before taking it out so that the bowl doesn’t break from the sudden change of temperature. (I don’t know much about the science behind it, but I have had the experience. hehe)
So, is this something you can try? Or have you made any lip balm before? I’ll love to hear about your experience below.
