If your skin is like those that depicts the weather, gather here for a meeting. If your skin tells people what season it is because of its dryness then this post is for you.
There’s less moisture in the air, which means your skin also gets less moisture. Hydration is key, but that can’t stop the windy, dry air from wreaking havoc on you, especially those areas that might be exposed to the elements more often. If you are looking for the easiest way to keep your skin supple and lock in moisture always, this post is for you. Here you will find out why you need body butter and learn how to make a simple homemade body butter you can use to quench your thirsty skin this cold, dry season.
What is body butter?
The body butter is a skin moisturiser, which is perfect for the dry season, and that typically contains natural butter and natural oil. This is totally different from body lotions, creams and serums as they all work different things. For body butter, it is the perfect skincare product for locking in moisture during the cold, dry season. While the others work to do whatever they are formulated for, but not to heavily protect your skin against the dry, windy, dusty elements that come with winter/harmattan.
If you are wondering why you can’t use a body lotion to keep in moisture instead, it’s because the lotion is generally lighter than body butter and it will not give your skin the desired protection from the wind. Body butter on the other hand has a heavier, balmier feeling and texture than lotion and is perfect for protecting the skin this season.
Why your body needs good skin butter this dry season?
The body butter, when applied, is known to be very effective at retaining moisture, nourishing, lubricating and rejuvenating the skin, especially in dry seasons. It can be used all over the body or just on areas that are the most affected by the weather, e.g lips, arms, legs, elbows and knees.
The dry season (or “harmattan” as it is mostly called here) is the best time to bring out all your heavy and oily skin products because your skin needs the extra moisture. And of course, body butter has got all the necessary qualities that can give your skin the necessary protection. If you are wondering why you need to have and make YOUR OWN body butter this dry season, the reasons are very obvious. Here are some of them:
- Making your own body butter gives you full control over what you add and what you remove. By so doing, you are sure your skin is getting the best care while enjoying the lubrication that comes with using the butter.
- You need to have your own body butter as applying it this season helps to reduce the chances of skin problems. Problems that may arise as a result of having dry, chapped skin, like sore wounds for instance.
- Body butter can help your skin stay young, supple and well-moisturized.
- You would find your skin having a healthy shine always as the body butter can give it a glow you can’t get with creams or lotions this season.
- Your body butter can reduce the appearance of blemishes as the dry season has been the period most products are known to work because your skin is open to accept them all. So, with good body butter, your blemishes would get to fade away in no time.
- Body butter can help fight wrinkles as your skin would be healthy from using natural ingredients daily. Be rest assured that with the right routine and diet, wrinkles would stay far away. your
- After stripping the moisture right out of your skin after a warm shower, the body butter can help seal moisture back in and help retain it for as long as possible.
- Since you can use body butter at any time of day or night, you can always reapply more when you feel your skin s getting dry, but that is unlikely as long as you use the best ingredients while creating yours.
- Massaging your hydrating body butter all over your skin daily to help lock in moisture will go a long way to improve blood circulation under the skin and give your skin a smoother and healthier appearance.
Now that you know why it is important to make and have your own body butter, let’s get to what you need to do yours at home.
What you need to make your own body butter
The body butter is like the simplest skincare products you can make as they require very few things that are quite affordable and readily available. The two major ingredients needed to make body butter include:
- Natural Butter: A good and natural is the number one thing to have. Shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, avocado butter, olive butter or any other natural skin butter you feel is the best for your skin would do just fine. I will always recommend that you use the butter that would address your skin needs while helping to seal moisture. For instance, mango butter would go a long way if you have wounds on your skin as it has the ability to heal those. Shea butter would be great if you want to soften, tone and soothe your skin. And of course, olive butter can help restore moisture to dry damaged skin. Check to see the properties of any butter and see if it suits your skin needs before choosing it.
- Natural Oil: A very good skin oil will help to provide moisturizing, protective, and antibacterial qualities to complete the care. You can use coconut oil, argan oil, rosehip seed oil, olive oil, jojoba oil or other good skin oils and you will still get the desired results. Also, it is important to pick a good oil that will address your skin issues so that it can work beyond moisturizing. For example, coconut oil has a natural antibacterial and antifungal property that can help to protect the skin from dry elements. Jojoba oil can boost the skin’s glow, soothe eczema-prone skin and more. And of course, argan oil can hydrate the skin and boost its elasticity. You may also need to check the properties of the oil you choose to be sure you are getting what’s best for your skin.
Other (optional) ingredient you can add include essential oils, for their fragrance and extra relaxing effects. You can choose ANY essential oil as they can still work as a great addition with the butter and oil blend. Again, you can pick any of the essential oils that would provide your skin with what it needs at the moment. For instance, lemongrass essential oil can help even out your skin tone. Rosemary essential oil can stimulate healing to leave your skin more refreshed than ever. And of course, black seed essential oil can help to improve the skin’s moisture and hydration, reduce inflammation and the presence of bacteria to aid in wound healing. Just pick any essential oil you are comfortable with and you are good to go. If you do not have any, that’s not a problem.
Make your own body butter for your skin this dry season
Now that you are ready to make your own body butter, let’s get measuring! To make a seven-ounce jar of body butter, you will need:
- 8 tablespoons of melted butter
- 6 tablespoons of oil
- 6 drops of your choice of essential oil
Essential oil and lemon juice are totally optional. Also, you can use more than one butter type if you choose, just to get the best out of them all. Melt the kinds of butter you want together and you are good.
Note that you can increase the measurements if you will be making more than a seven-ounce jar of body butter. Just be sure to maintain this ratio and multiply it accurately.
Preparation
So, once you have got your 2 major ingredients, you can get started on making your very own homemade body butter to protect your skin this dry season. Let’s get started:
- First, melt the butter of your choice in a double boiler or over boiling water inside a glass bowl. This can take up to 30 minutes, but once you see it has completed melted, take it out and measure out 8 tablespoons. If you will be using more than one butter, be sure to measure them all to a total of 8 tablespoons.
- Next, pour in 6 tablespoons of your choice of oil and stir.
- Place it back over the heat source and allow them to mix together.
- If you will be using an essential oil, allow the melted solution to cool down a bit (not to a solid-state) before adding 6 drops of your choice of essential oil. This is because you do not want the hot mixture to interfere with your essential oil.
- Stir it a little and place it in the fridge for one hour, or once the mixture begins to harden around the edges.
- Bring it out and use a small hand mixer, standing mixer or a good self-stirring device to whip the mixture to a smooth consistency for 10 minutes. You are free to whip it longer if you want a very fluffy, smooth texture of butter.
- Get a clean spoon and transfer the whipped butter into a clean container/jar for storage, and which you can easily scoop out from when you want to apply it on your skin.
- Store in a cool, dark place only to remove when you want to use it.
- To clean the bowl and whipping device, you can place the bowl over the water or double boiler and the stirring device inside the bowl. Once it starts reheating, it would melt anything left on them. You can quickly use a kitchen towel to wipe it off.
And voila! Your DIY butter body is ready to give your skin the best kind of protection it needs!
Here is a simple infographic that shows the preparation process which you can go through and save for later.
How to use body butter?
This butter for the body is 100% safe and there is no limit to how you can use it. For best results though, use it twice daily, especially morning and night. But, if you ever feel the need to use it in-between, feel free to feed your body with the natural goodness. It’s recommended that you use body butter right after your shower/bath. Once you step out and your body is still a bit damp, quickly apply a generous amount of the prepared butter on your skin and massage it gently to help it get absorbed quickly.
And keep in mind that you need to avoid using this body butter on your face. It is quite thick and heavy, the last thing you want is to have so much coating on your face that can clog your pores and even cause pimples. Instead, use a very good face moisturizer that is formulated to keep your face supple and well-moisturized.
Conclusion
Agreed, there are lots of moisturizers with extra indulgence that can help you combat seasonal dryness in your skin. But some of those tend to be pretty expensive. Instead, you can make your own plant-based body butter at home with just a few ingredients. And you can tailor it to what you like (and avoid what you don’t). For example, you can add ingredients that have benefits beyond moisturizing and tap into their extra benefits.
I believe with the DIY process explained above, you can whip up your own homemade body butter and treat your skin to 100% natural and glowing protection this dry season.
