So, here are some things to watch out for to avoid irritation or other skin complications when trying out new home remedies:
- Remember that you’ll need to consult a dermatologist before trying anything new on your face to avoid irritation or skin reactions.
- Choose all ingredients with caution and carefully note their effects and benefits before picking it for use.
- Not all ingredients work together. find out those that cannot be mixed with others and use them separately so they don’t react on your skin.
- Opt-in for more natural ingredients as these ones have little to no harmful effect on your skin.
- Always do a spot check to be sure your skin will not negatively react to your finished product.

3 Simple DIY Facial Care Routine To Get That Flawless Face
-
FOR DIY FACE MASKS:
Face masks are specifically designed to penetrate into our pores for deep cleaning, moisturizing and exfoliation. There may be lots of face masks out there; the best thing you can do is to make your own as you will have better control of what to add and what not to. However, you should have these in mind when making yours at home:
a. Carefully choose a base ingredient for the face mask:
You will realize that many DIY face mask recipes call for one thick base that can coat easily on the skin to help it stay in place. To make it easy for you, here are some common base ingredients that work just fine and why they will be good for you:
- Honey: This will work as a great base ingredient as it is known to clear pores, keep skin youthful and hydrated.
- Plain yoghurt: This can also be used to naturally smooth the skin.
- Avocado: It has chlorophyll to reduce inflammation, water to hydrate, Vitamin E to promote softness and prevent wrinkles, and gentle fibres that can also help your mask stick together.
- Aloe vera gel: The gel inside the aloe vera plant has been known to hydrate skin, stimulate collagen production and even combat acne.
- Mashed bananas: This is very good to help tighten skin and keep it smooth and hydrated.
These ingredients above are usually thick and can form very good base ingredients. And they have very good skin benefits so you are sure your skin will trap the nutrients in for effective results during your facial care routines.
b. Add extras with caution:
Adding extras like botanicals, essential oils, and spices to the face mask should be done with so much caution. Some botanicals you can try include:
- One or two drops of tea tree oil which will help prevent moderate acne.
- A pinch of cinnamon or turmeric which will help add gentle exfoliating properties to your mask.
c. Always do a spot check:
When making any DIY face mask, keep in mind potential allergies or reactions and consult with your dermatologist about any issues with your skin. Some may be too harsh for sensitive skins, while some can cause more harm when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Just be sure to do a spot check of all ingredients to see if irritation develops. You can try by applying it over your inner arm and leave for a while to see if there will be any reaction. Be careful to avoid the delicate eye area too!

FOR DIY FACE MOISTURIZER:
Typically, your moisturizers have three purposes – to hydrate, to smooth and to lock in moisture. Your skin needs much hydration to stay healthy and clear. Here are some DIY skin moisturizer ideas you can make at home:
a. Choose a good base:
All moisturizers consist of ingredients that either form a barrier on the skin to lock in moisture, boost skin’s natural moisture, or soften the skin. All these will work to keep skin smoother and more hydrated. Using any of these base moisturizing ingredients alone or mixed together can go a long way:
- Argan oil: This lightweight oil is believed to be packed with skin-beneficial Vitamins A and E and is taking over the beauty world because it is great for the skin in many ways than one.
- Coconut oil: This oil is believed to penetrate the skin better than most oils, so it’s believed to quickly and effectively moisturize dry, flaky skin types faster.
- Shea butter: It is a moisturizing agent known to alleviate dry skin problems and goes easy on the skin.
- Cocoa butter: Known to improve skin elasticity and blend well with the skin locking in moisture perfectly.
NB: If you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, be extra-diligent when researching whether your DIY moisturizer base is comedogenic (i.e pore-blocking) or not. You do not want to worsen your blackheads and acne. Ingredients like coconut oil or olive oil are considered comedogenic, and might not be appropriate for some types of skin, including very sensitive skin. So, opt for moisturizing agents that are non-comedogenic if you fall into this category.
If you need a good non-comedogenic sunscreen to go with your moisturizer, I’ll recommend this Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion Sunscreen For Acne-Prone Skin, Broad Spectrum SPF 55 with Helioplex Technology, Oil- and Fragrance-Free.
It has a water-light texture that leaves a weightless, matte finish and allows the skin to breathe while keeping any unwanted skin problems at bay. Check more details on Amazon by clicking here.
b. Add essential oils and botanicals:
People usually recommend the addition of hydrators and essential oils to DIY recipes and it’s quite a good idea to follow. Hydrators help draws moisture into the skin, while essential oils are believed to add anti-ageing benefits. Many lotions already have hydrators and agents for skin moisturization, so try including a drop or two of essential oils for improved fragrance and the added benefits. For extra hydration, consider adding ingredients like:
- Glycerin: Which is a gentle hydrator that binds water to your skin and is the best option for sensitive, dry skin.
- Aloe-vera gel: This is known to have hydrating properties. Try mixing a small portion into your base moisturizer before use.
Some DIY recipes call for one or two drops of essential oils to provide additional skincare and sensory benefits. Here are a few popular additions you can start using:
- Lavender oil: This is commonly used to provide aromatherapy benefits.
- Rose oil: This can add a rosy scent to your lotion.
- Tea tree oil: This can be used for particularly oily areas.
NB: These are particularly strong botanicals and should be used sparingly. Mixtures should always be spot-checked on a small section of your skin before general use too.
-
FOR DIY SKIN TONER:
A good DIY skin toner should be the last step of your cleansing routine. Toners are intended to remove any remaining dust or dirt while keeping your skin’s balance in check. Depending on the ingredients, toners can be hydrating, soothing, or even help keep oil at bay. Here is how you can get yours:
a. Toning Ingredients:
These popular ingredients below may work best alone after diluting them slightly with water or mixed depending on how skin reacts. Always remember to spot check first to avoid reactions.
- Rosewater: An all-natural DIY skin toner believed to be suited for sensitive skin, and can be mixed with purified water.
- Witch hazel: Witch hazel’s potent astringent properties can help balance eczema- and acne-prone skin.
- Green tea: Green tea is known to have naturally occurring antioxidants which some believe to be potent anti-ageing properties.
- Apple cider vinegar: Oily or acne-prone skin may benefit from acidic apple cider vinegar. It’s best to dilute with water before applying to the skin to help avoid irritation.
b. Add nourishing oil:
It’s okay to add one or two drops of essential oils known for their fragrance or anti-acne properties to your skin toner. Here are some of them you can use. It’s better to dilute to avoid irritating the skin:
- Tea tree oil: One or two drops is enough to calm acne-prone skin.
- Essential oils: Use any one of your choices for fragrance. Avoid thyme, clove, cinnamon bark, or oregano oils as these can irritate the skin. Be careful with citrus oils too, as they may cause burns when under the sun for long.
c. Do a spot check:
Before using, apply to a small section of your skin (preferably your arm) to test for any unpleasant reactions. This is important as DIY skin toners can include somewhat abrasive liquids which may not sit well with your skin.
If this is clear to you, let’s go through how you can mix all these ingredients to get your facial care recipe.
How To Make These DIY Facial Care Products For Your Routine
The good thing with the 3 simple recipes mentioned earlier is that there is no special skill needed. All you need is to get all the ingredients ready for each product and mix in a bowl to store in small bottles for use later. I’ll talk about them as one because basically you can achieve the same result using the same method for them all. Here’s how to make these simple DIY facial care products:
- Get all your natural ingredients and get them mashed, blended or however you want to extract the nutrient.
- Select all the extras you will need to add in each recipe and measure them properly before setting aside. This is your essential oils, botanicals and spices.
- Arrange clean bowls and stirring spoon/stick on your work table and ensure they are wiped dry.
- Pour all the natural ingredients into a clean, dry bowl and add the extras to it. Stir well until they are properly mixed. Use a hand mixer at a moderate speed if you can.
- After mixing your ingredients together, pour those that came out finished in liquid form in a spray bottle. The ones that come out a bit thicker should be poured into a container/bottle with a larger opening.
And voila! Your DIY face mask, moisturizer and toner are ready to be added to your facial care routine to help you get that glowing and flawless face!
How To Apply These Facial Care Products
Application is quite simple as each product name is already a giveaway on how it can be applied. After doing a spot check and the products are fine on your skin, you can go on to apply them properly to achieve that flawless face goal during your facial care routine. Here is how:
-
Face Mask Application:
This is an important facial care routine. Face masks are great when it comes to removing dirt from the skin, taking care of acne, dark spot, oily and dry face etc. they are great for hydrating the face, balancing your skin’s complexion and clearing the face of blemish. This is an important facial care routine and as you have gone ahead to make your own face mask you can apply and be sure to see a good result. You can use this at night for an overnight application, or in the morning before your bath.
Use your fingers or a foundation brush to scoop a little at a time and apply all over your face (excluding the eyelids area). Apply generously to properly cover all areas. The mixture is expected to sit on your face. If you noticed it dripping fast, you may have used a watery ingredient that may have ruined the production. You can leave the mask on your face for 10 minutes (or more) and rinse off with warm water. You can allow it air-dry so there’s no need for cleaning your face with a towel.
-
Facial Moisturizer Application:
Moisturizers are great for preventing skin dryness as they can lock in moisture allowing your skin to stay hydrated for long. This is better applied after taking your bath at night or in the morning. At night, your makeup should be wiped off first before thoroughly washing the face to apply your moisturizer. In the morning, apply it immediate you step out of the bathroom before any makeup goes on.
For your moisturizer, you can also use your fingers to scoop little and pat all over your face or gently rub into the skin. This way the skin will absorb it faster for effective result.
-
Face/Skin Toner Application:
This is basically acting as a cleanser to help cleanse the skin and shrink the appearance of pores. You can apply with a cotton ball or pad after using a face mask. You can also spray it on your face and use your fingers to make a washing motion on your face before using a cotton ball to dab the residue.
Conclusion
Trust me, DIY recipes for your face can give you just that result you are looking for as long as you do it the right way using the right ingredients. Don’t forget to check with a dermatologist if you aren’t really sure what to use.
